I know someone who can be so smart and understanding at times, then at other times seems to do anything she can to be mean and hateful. Really cruel! Trying to hurt others as much as possible, and not even making sense. She attacks children as well as adults, strangers as well as people she knows. Anything she can do to upset as many people as possible and seems to take great pleasure in it. Then, suddenly, she seems to be a nice person again. She seems to go back and forth like this. What do you make of this?

With ten years experience in the Mental Health Field (SMI Adults) I have consulted on possible cases but have no evidence to support a single diagnosis according to the required criteria listed in the DSM-IV (and I have seen many cases similar to the person you know which is more than likely Bi-Polar or Borderline disorder if any disorder at all). No; I do not believe in multiple personalitie disorder at this time.

Yes, we each have different behaviors in different situations. A healthy person makes use of all the different aspects in an appropriate way. Someone who was subjected to trauma fractured into separate and distinct personalities that exhibit after a "triggering" event.
A healthy person is aware and controls the shifts.
An unhealthy person is dis-associated from the process, so he is unaware and has no control.

Yes.I actually fell in love with a woman with multiple personalities.
She warned me but I thought she meant she would get depressed or something until one day we were sitting on a lawn talking and I actually watched her change.
I mean I looked her in the eyes and watched the person I loved change into someone I did not know.
I was heartbroken.But wiser.

Yes, these are called Personality Disorders, there are many medical names for these.
I to, know someone, with these, she lies on people, and 2 weeks later, acts or shows as it never happened. Happy one Day, depressed the next...
Its sad, and people who have this need to seek medical treatment. It is a disease, and alot of the time, they cannot help it. The person I know that lies so bad, Actually believes her lies. Its so sad, but that is part of the disease and disorder.
I would encourage this person you know, to seek medical treatment...

That doesn't sound like multiple personality disorder (which is now called dissociative identity disorder DID). She just sounds like a cranky confused lady.

Wait arent these personality disorders an act of a repressed state of subconscious thought, usually a desire or emotional memory you locked away when young. Best way to confront these things, is not medicine, but rather fullfilling those repressed desires and allowing some time for you to regain control over yourself.

Sounds more like bi polar disorder. If she had multiple personalities, she(or the other people) would let you know. The splits will tell you their name and correct you anytime you call them anything else.
