The eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD destroyed Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplonti and Stabiae.
There's a lot of information on the net about the most famous, Pompeii and Herculaneum, and some fascinating pictures of how the towns now show us so much about Roman life. You can almost imagine them alive, their citizens going about their business.

Vesuvius is famous for a violent eruption in ad 79 which destroyed the towns of Herculaneum and Pompeii. Since then Mt. Vesuvius has erupted many times, including a violent eruption in 1631. Again, Pompeii and Herculaneum (both of which still have some good ruins, I'm told). But there are probably other, less famous, towns in that part of Italy that were destroyed too.

The eruption destroyed Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplonti and Stabiae and caused the death of Pliny the Elder among many other people.

The two mentioned above. However effects of the eruption were felt beyond these places, in smaller settlements and villages.
