How do I add FTP to my website?

I need clients to be able to download files from our design website using FTP but I don't know where to start! Any pointers or sites that could explain the process/ programs to use/ the script?

Clients need to be able to create a username and password to access the downloads. And there needs to be multiple download folders- one for each client- that only those clients can access.

You will need a ftp server. If your host does not provide one you will have to get one. On UNIX-like systems vsftpd is good.

Once that's up you'll have to devise a way to add users. Allow local logins and put the files in the proper home directory.
