16 is too old for competitive gymnastics. I've heard of adult gymnastics. I guess it's gymnastics with a much less degree of flexibility and agility, and for recreational and fitness purposes. Why don't you try sports aerobics or rhythmic gymnastics? I think you could still enroll in either.

16 is too old to do competitive gymnastics. I started at 13 and it was too late to be good at it. gymnastics will help train up your physical and mental strength and your flexibility. gymnastics also trains every single muscle in your body - so that'll help you keep fit and toned.

however, being 16, you might be more susceptible to injuries as gymnastics is quite a dangerous sport - even with all the safety measures. I'm not sure of any gymnastics clubs or centres in your area, but you could do a search or check out your local papers. you could probably enrol in an adult's gymnastics class - that would be more appropriate.

you also should ask your coach about risk of injury and all that just to be safe. but you'll have fun doing gym! remember that it's not all above doing cool moves and stunts - you must have the strength and flexibility before you can attempt certain moves.

also remember that in gymnastics - you have to go all the way when doing a move. NO HESITATION. NONE. you cannot hesitate or stop halfway, once you start a move, continue with it - don't ever stop! you can get badly injured if you hesitate and land in an awkward position. just have confidence and trust yourself.

Hi,

My friends and I got really into gymnastics around the age of 11 or so, but we never took classes. We made a low balance beam and bought mats and just did things on our own for fun. Also, we had a big trampoline outside and we taught ourselves how to do back flips and front tucks and all that kind of stuff on the trampoline. I don't think you're too old but it takes so much time and commitment that you really have to practice every day. Have fun though...it's such a great sport!!!

It might be harder when you start but give it a go. Don't push yourself to hard. My daughter started when she was 3 and progressed very fast. Some are different. Just try it first. You might be sore for a little bit but if you really like it then stay in there.

NEVER TOO OLD! get out there NOW - but take it slowly.
