Well, for a desktop it's quite easy. You pop out the HD and insert it in an other computer. You can also set it up with an external hard drive kit which you can buy from any computer-oriented store for not too much. The one problem is that you have a laptop, which have removable hard drives, yes, but they are smaller than normal hard drives. You can give it a shot. By swich on do you mean nothing at all happens when you attempt to power up or does BIOS show you stuff?

All you can do is find another laptop with the same type of hard drive and put yours in it then burn your files to a disc!
Or you could take your laptop to a shop and get it fixed!
A lack of power cannot be too hard to fix!
It might be just a fuse or a bad battery connection!

No - without power, the hard drive will not spin.
You could put the hard drive into another pc though.

You can pull out the laptop's hard drive and attach it to another working machine. It would then show up in My Computer just like a normal hard drive.

Depending on the type of hard drive that is in the "dead" notebook, (IDE or SATA) what you can do is take the hard drive out and use a USB enclosure. Keep in mind, that it is unlikely that you will be able to boot to it directly (You'll get a BSOD 0x7b) error, but you can access your docmuents and possibly back it up.

You can either put the HD in another laptop of the exact type, or GeekSquad and other companies have the stuff to retrieve your info.

You can either take the HD out and hold it to your head and try to read it telepathically, or...
You can take it to a computer tech and they can extract your data for you and burn it to a disk or two, or three so you can transfer it to a different machine.
