if you want a playful rat go female as they seem to like to play more. if you want a mellow rat that will want to cuddle most of the time or you want a lap rat go male. my male rat is five months old and he sleeps in my lap while i'm watching tv or on the computer he'll also be content to sit on my shoulder any time.

i think that the best gender of rat to own are females as they are more docile, smell less, and seem to have a better attitude towards their owners.
i have owned both male and female rats and i got on best with the females as they were easier to train and keep as they did not bite, smell as much and they were less Territorial.
hope this can be of some help to you

I have also kept rats & mice & in my opinion, they are all friendly & relaxed with handling.
One thing I would say though - Female's don't smell as bad as male's.
Male's give off a worse smell as their urine is alot stronger.
Good Luck - they are lovely pets to keep.

This isn't much to relate with the question but if you want to have fun with your rat i have herd of this good game you can play with them.
Its called pea fishing, you get a bowl of water and put some unfrozen peas inside, they love to fish them out and eat them!
Good Luck with the rats and take care!

females tend to be nicer smelling the same as female cats/dogs etc, to do with hormone production, although i suppose personality wise its hit and miss, depends on the rat i guess, theres good and bad!

It is a well known fact that ALL rats are friendly - If you offer them some cheese they will owe you big time and you can call in the favours for as long as they are alive!

My own experience says that there is no difference between male and female as long as you handle them correctly and give them the correct care.
