Vodou is a monotheistic religion. We worship one God called Bondye or Good God. We honor our ancestors because they are our blood and without them we would not be here. We serve the lwa (elevated spirits) which are similar to angels or saints. They are the intermediaries between us and Bondye.
Vodou is an African Derived Religion. The type I practice is Haitian Vodou. This is different from New Orleans Voodoo. Within Vodou there are Mambos and Hougan (priests) that hold fets (service) for the various lwa. At the fet we give the favorite offerings to the lwa, we sing and dance for them also. All the time trying to bring the lwa down through possession. Possession is entirely voluntery. It is also considered a privelege and a blessing to become ridden by the lwa. To be ridden by the lwa means the lwa chose you as thier vessell of light. It is wonderful and powerful experience. We call the lwa to help us when we can not help ourselves.
Now there are two parts to Vodou the same as any other religion. Vodou focuses on family, community, and positive aspects of life. A sosyete or house focuses on helping those who are less fortunate. All offerings are shared among the members and guests. No one goes hungry. No one stays sick. All funds that come into the house are used to help the members and the community.
On the flip side thier are Bokors or sorcerors. They will do anything for money. These are the ones that use malefic magic and herbs to harm people. They are the ones that create zombies and throw curses. This only comprises about 5% of the practitioners though.
I have given a very general overview of Vodou. Here is the website for the house I belong to. Thier are articles written by Mambo that explain in more detail what Vodou is about why also a great article on why she chose Vodou or rather Vodou chose her! http://www.sosyetedumarche.com/Vodou_Info/vodou_info.html
Hope this helps you out!

Voodoo is a RELIGION that derived from Haiti.
If you're referring to the whole "evil magic" or even just the "magic" part, you'd be confusing voodoo with hoodoo.
Hoodoo is a practice much like black magic that people use to inflict pain and suffering on others.
It's quite common for people to confuse the two and go running at the mention of the word "voodoo." But it's just a religion, that's all, nothing more. If you want to see some creepy, scary stuff, google the art of hoodoo.

Voodoo is a religion that originated in Africa and is still practices in some parts of that continent. The place most associated with voodoo though is the island of Haiti. It is nothing like whatever you read in 'The Hardy Boys' though and is really quite a benign religion.

Voodoo is an ancient African religion. Through the power of the deity, a Voodoo... person exacts his revenge through rituals involving pain in effigy.
Skin: Pain
Feces: control
Urine: strong control/ love (>..<)
Honey: (used with urine) control/love
Blood: pain/control
Common ingredients:
(these belonging to the victim)
Hair, Personal belongings, a picture, a plucked chicken
The motive is to find something appealing to devote life to, and to exact revenge/force to love/control someone.

Voodoo is a religion that is highly misunderstood mostly thanks to Holywood. It is practiced in the southern US, and many Caribbean islands, especially in Haiti, where it is the predominant religion of the people.
I have seen many things in Haiti, most of them attributed to Voodoo, but honestly, I have my doubts. I have been to voodoo rituals with my Haitian friends, and I am allowed to watch, but obviously not to participate.
One fact about those who practice voodoo is that most of them are nice people. I did meet some who were dangerous guys, but I do not believe they are dangerous because of their religion, I think they are dangerous because of themselves.

It is about power and worship. If you choose to worship Satan He might give you power. One way this can happen is through Voodoo.
