We should save them because they are so big, we maybe can use them for food one day if supplies run short.

Manatees are the elephant of Florida's waterways. People say, "What good do they do?", in two years of working on a nature tour boat, the only obvious thing that I could think of was this:

They recycle seagrass into a form that is more digestable by other species. There's a lot of animals at the bottom of the food chain that feed on that recycled seagrass, just like there's a lot of animals at the bottom of the food chain in Africa that feed off of elephant dung.

They're a source of tourism revenue for our state as well. Two years on a boat, and you wouldn't believe how many people came to Florida specifically to see manatees. It's amazing.

And you gotta admit, they are just so darn ugly they're cute...

Well, they aren't technically all that important to us. We try to save any species that is dwindling in numbers due to human expansion. Manatees are large, docile organisms (i.e. they are not a threat to anyone but sea grasses) that are very susceptible to injury and death by motorboats and other water craft.

You might wonder why we'd put so much effort into preserving a seemingly useless species when there are thousands of other, less visible ones that need saving. And it really is only because they are cute. It's easy to get public support for their conservation.

Because they will soon be extinct....we had one they found in the Mississippi river about 2 months ago. It swam all the way up the river to memphis, tn. Sea world tried to come out and capture it but they didnt suceed. They later found it dead about 3 weeks later

Everything is an important part of the food web. If one part no longer exists, it impacts the entire web in numerous ways. Everything is tied together, and each part has it's own significance.

for any species that is going extinct, we want to try to preserve them so that we keep the species alive. otherwise, this could happen with any species and we wouldnt be left with any variety of species. also keep in mind that every species has their purpose, for ex. the bees help distribute the pollen etc.
