I would be very cautious of buying this car but your question wasnt on advice of buying so let me try answering your question with my knowledge and thoughts, radiator cap, clutch fan, water pump, radiator hoses, thermostat, this is all things that can cause the car to over heat, now things i advise you to ask the seller, how long has it been overheating, what kind of driving conditions cause it, what has he done to try and fix this, has he actually drove the car with it over heated, etc. there is many sever damages over heating can do to the engine, .. if you need more help are have any more questions on this feel free to email me . but how ever do not pay to much for this car. and buy with cautiion. it could be very simple, and be a great deal and easily repair and no damages caused or if the previous owner ignored it etc.. it could be your first step into a night mare.

There are many things that could be causing this problem. Bad thermostat, or poor water circulation are common facors. A lot of times, it can be solved by a system flush, but not always. It gould be a serious issue as well. Your best bet is to tak the car to a shop and have it looked at. If a seller is being honest, they usually won't have a problem with this. I have been burned before by purchasing a vehicle that I thought had an easy repair, only to find out it was a lot more serious than I had expected.

the radiator is not connected in any way to white smoke... so no matter if it is clog or not it will not make the engine start making white smoke and yes, the problem can be head gasket, but... when you take the head out you should take it to a machine shop and run a pressurize test, that test can tell you if the head has a crack or any leak if you do so, that will make a better performance on the engine as well because you will know everything is ok and problem free

DO NOT BUY IT!!!!! Mazdas are good cars but overheating could be a sign of a cracked head, or cracked radiator, or worse a cracked block! There are other cars that i am sure are better uses of your hard earned bucks, this is one that you should walk away from!

You may be ablel to fix it and then again you may not. My daughter had a Mustang that she couldn't GET any heat out of, and no one could fix it (they tried everything). So you might be getting someone else's problems....just my opinion !!
