It may not mean anything. If they swim around or get excited, they can breathe more heavily. However, it could be a problem, so get a master testing kit and test your levels.
Ammonia and nitrites should be 0
Nitrates should be under 30ppm
Temp should be 78F

Also, what is the size of your tank? Oscars and pacus are BIG fish - oscars growing to 12" or more and pacus to 30" or more. If their tank is not big enough, it will definitely cause undue stress (and eventually death)

They could have parasites. possibly gill flukes! check the gill area for white things that look like a small worms. If you don't see anything thats okay. If the water is good then it is a parasite. The mardel parasite medicines are best. Be careful not to overdose. A hospital tank is recommended but if not avaliable. treating them in there tank would be fine. I can't remember off hand which medicine the have that works on gill flukes. It's either gill flukes or another internal parasite for sure!!!!!! My first guess is gill flukes. Go to your local fish store and read the back of the bottles for mardel products. They will have symptoms on the bottle. Buy the one that best describles the symptoms of your fish! the gill fluke medicines also kill some of the internal parasites that could cause this......... If you treat in the main tank, that tank will have to under go a nice cleaning after the treatment.... Using a syphon, syphon the gravel well sucking out 20% of the water. When the medicine kills the flukes they fall off into the graval if you don't remove them they will reinfest your fish again! Gill flukes are HARD to kill if you don't get on it right away and the proper medicine is essential!!!!!!! Good luck.... Hope this help! Julie

Probably nothing at all to worry about. Check the tank temperature and see if maybe it's a few degrees warmer than usual, that would be the most likely cause.
