Whats with the ALL CAPS.
Poltergeist is a german word, meaning noisy (or restless) spirit. A poltergeist is supposed to be the ghost of a deceased person who has not or cannot for some reason cross over into the next world, and so continues to believe it is still alive. Of course the movies will make it look like the ghost is angry or vicious, but thats not the definition of a poltergeist.

A poltergeist is a manifestation of energy - not a spirit. It usually comes from small children, or adults who have a physical disability. Paralysis may cause one to manifest. Usually, poltergeists appear at the onset of puberty, and leave after those few troublesome years. This is why they are said to 'follow'. It is not a spirit that is following, but the energy of the family member that never leaves the person. Prayers can't be said to get rid of it, though if it makes the 'victim' of the poltergeist feel better, go for it. Usually, the problem takes care of itself - they grow out of it, they die, or the problem that they were trying to make known has been solved.

In popular legend, a poltergeist is the manifestation, tied to someone in the house, usually a child, and it is said that their nature is to move objects about, open and close doors, turn the lights on and off etc. It was also thought that this was the involuntary and subconscious actions of a person rather than a spirit. Motive isn't thought to be an issue.

A poltergeist is a type of ghost or demon that manipulates objects by moving them, throwing them etc. Poltergeist are considered more dangerous than your average ghost because they may cause you physical harm. A poltergiest usually is an angry or mischievious spirit. Their motive is usually out of anger or wanting to cause trouble.

Ok, I think poltergeists are *not* ghosts - they are just energy that's being manipulated (usually unconsciously) by living people. It's a misconception that ghostly activity is caused by poltergeists.
This is a good website on ghosts, poltergeists etc...

A Poltergeist is a ghost. It is called a Poltergeist because it is like a trickster. it likes to move things and cause havoc. Its not exactly a motive it just hasn't moved on yet. They can sometimes harm you.

Well,my kid brother used to have this stuuuupid girlfriend who told everybody that the apartment they lived in was haunted.A poltergeist was throwing crap around, all kinds of crap.
One day,a bunch of us were over for dinner.Stella(the g/f)was in the kitchen, getting supper ready, when my brother gets off the couch, goes over to the fireplace, and slaps this ashtray acroos the room, where it smashes into the wall, breaking into a million shards.
She comes running into the living room, screaming"you see?Do you see?"
My brother was the poltergeist, just frakking with a stupid girl's head.In my opinion, that's all they are-just something for the stupid to buy into.
