I think bare feet provide better grip for playing twister. Also I just love looking at peoples' feet. The foot is just an amazingly beautiful and captivating work of art! I always play barefoot, but I haven't had the opportunity since I lived in Bruce Hall at the University of North Texas campus. Almost everyone there played barefoot. We were a bunch of bohemian types, and I can honestly say that nearly half the folks were barefoot in the dorm building at any given moment.

Socks are very slippery, last winter I played Twister with some friends and while at first most people left their socks on -they're not regular barefooters and it was pretty chilly too- after a while most took off their socks, if you gotta go all the way across the field you'll almost certainly slip if you're wearing socks. Shoes, of course, are evil for other players' fingers and toes!

I haven't played twister in ages, but if I did I'd play barefoot.

barefoot is kinda gross... playing it naked might be a turn on for some people (i guess) but unless you plan to wash that mat after you're done playing then I really think you should leave the socks on :X
