I love your name choice. It sounds great together. I'd leave it in that order. It's honoring a tradition and it's not a big deal to call him Alex. My son is John and we nicknamed him Jack since his dad and grandpa are John. At school they call him John for one day, and now everyone knows he goes by Jack. Best of luck to you!!!!

That name is ridiculously common, just to let you know. Even if you like being traditional, I know of six boys born within the past ten years named James Alexander. I personally have grown up with a name that is very common and I'm really tired of it, it's getting very confusing. There are some other traditional names to use, such as: Paul, Grant, Dean, Caleb, Evan, and Samuel that aren't unheard of but aren't as popular.

Great names. But, if you intend to call him Alex, why not call him Alexander James, rather than James Alexander? Makes more sense that way.

I think James Alexander has a nice ring to it. You could also consider calling him Jamie, or even Xander. But I like Alex too.

Have you seen the movie 'Last Boy Scout'??? That was Damon Wayans characters name in the movie. James Alexander Diggs. I've always remembered the name b/c I liked it. And I see nothing wrong w/ calling him by his middle name, my mom's been called by her's her entire life.

That's a nice, strong, traditional name.
Another option, besides calling him Alex, would be to call him Jake. That is usually thought of as a nickname for Jacob, but I have a friend who named her son James after his father, and they call him Jake. I've always thought that was cute.

Both sound very nice, but if you're going to call him by Alex then have Alexander as his first name. My mother was named Claudette June on her birth certificate but my grandparents called her by June, it was a great hassle for her having to continuously correct people and tell them that her name was June not Claudette.
Congratulations!!!
