what year did the vietnam war start and end?

1959 - April 30th 1975, although American troops didn't arrive until 1965.
They were late for the last two wars so they thought they would go for the complete set!

As some of your respondents have said, it depends on your definition, If you're talking about U>S> involvement, it would be from at least 1953 to April of 1975. If you mean the fight between the forces led by Ho Chi Minh and the government in the South, then you are talking about 1946 to 1975.
If you mean the Vietnamese fighting against foreign peoples occupying their territory, then you are talking from the early Middle Ages to the present.

(I am a Vietnam Veteran----Army Infantry-----so when I say "foreign peoples......" I am not US bashing.

Depends on definition of war. American military advisers were in Viet Nam as early as 1954. They participated in much more than advising. How do I know? I am not saying but trust me, the US was there.
