At my doctor appointment yesterday I was told that I was 2 cm dilated, 80% effaced and at a -1. I know what dilation and effacement are, but what does the -1 refer to. what number do I need to get to to be ready for delivery?

The station of the baby refers to the progress of the head through the pelvis. -1 station means your baby's head is just a little bit over the pelvis. When you get to positive numbers it means the head has decended into the pelvis and it's almost time to push. I was 100% effaced, dilated to 2 and at -1 station a week before I went into labor.

those numbers are referred to as"stations"
Station: A term used to describe the location of a baby's presenting part (usually the top of the head) relative to the mother's pelvic bones during pregnancy and labor; ranges from -5 when the presenting part is at the inlet of the maternal pelvis to +5 when it is at the outlet (and delivery is imminent).
it means, yay! the process has started but you've still got a long way to go (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)

congrats, i hope all goes well!

the stations are -5, -4. -3, -2, -1 0 +1, +2 etc. I think +2 is when the baby is actually crowning, 0 s when the baby is all the way down, just about to start making an entrance into the pelivis...if I am remembering correctly..-1 is good!! I was -2 when they induced me. You are close! Good luck!

-1 has nothing to do with pain...uggg

-1 refers to the position of the baby -- the call it "station".

If you can imagine your babies head kind if floating -1 station means it's floating above the pelvis, and O station means the babies head is engaged and on the pelvis and +1 means that the baby is also engaged and preparing to pass through the birth canal

It's where you baby is located inside your pelvis. It's up one station above your cervis in your pelvis. Your doctor can show you on a chart or model, better yet, go here:
