I was a biochemist - graduated as one. Now I do more cancer research/cellular biology. Anyway, my work as a biochemist involved mostly expression, purification and characterization of proteins, analysis of the catalytic activity of several enzymes, and synthesis of modified proteins in vitro, for further studies. If it sounds a bit vague, it's because it is a very wide field. If you need details, email me!

The job, when your experiments work its the best thing ever, that warm fuzzy glow and the knowledge that your work is a tiny but important piece in a very big jigsaw is fantastic.

If you work with proteins and end up standing in a cold room for 11 hours at a time doing experiments that don't work for no apparent reason its crushing - your labmates start removing sharp objects from your vicinity.

My brother in law graduated from SD State in Ca and moved to Switzerland with one of his professors 20 yrs. ago and has worked for Roche ever since. Great job. I think my son is going to follow in his footsteps.. Brother in law runs his own lab and studies proteins..
