Three is only a crowd when either two of the three would prefer to be alone together, or both of the other two would prefer to be alone with themselves (in which case 2 would also be a crowd).
Generally that phrase is used when referring to some cases of a couple and a third party...the third party may feel awkward if the couple starts to get "romantic" or the couple may feel the 3rd person is keeping them from getting "romantic"
In a roommate situation it shouldn't be the same issue, and although if the other 2 guys know one another they may have a friendship bond already, but that doesn't mean you won't be a good fit as a roommate or won't enjoy each of their company. Guys tend to do better in such situations than women, as women are more likely to become jealous of one another, etc.

You have to clarify in your own mind what it is you are there for! Do you want a place to live or do you want to form a bond with two other males? Let me tell you from experience. Keep yourself a bit distant from any bond until you really know them. This could take some time too.
I thought I had known people then one day some of my money disappeared. Then at the end of the month the land lord wanted the rent which was two weeks late.
The one we trusted to pay the rent didn't and stole more on top of that.
Be careful with your trust.

The saying can be true, but not always. I have 2 girls that I'm great friends with and suprisingly, the 3 of us were always able to hang out, spend time together, even go on vacation together without one of us ever feeling like they were excluded. I think it really depends on the people involved. And remember that if you only really know one of them, it'll take time for you and the other guy to get to know each other and become comfortable. Don't stress, it'll either happen or it won't.

Personally, I would NEVER live with 3 people. I've lived w/ 1 other person before, and it was a girl, which, I think girls are worse than guys. Although, I have guy friends who have lived together and never had problems until they lived together. It all depends on what kind of person you are though. I wouldn't suggest it, but it's always good for the experience! Then, you know to never do it again! GOOD LUCK!

Don't take that phrase literally. In some cases, yes that may be so but not in all cases. Just go with the flow and take each day as it comes. Don't dwell on negative point of views or what others might say, who knows the three of you could become best of friends.

True dat, two will always bond a bit closer and a third will feel "lesser", but if your confident enough, this shouldn't matter. In reality the one "left out" will have more independence that the other two who are always hung up on where they're going and who they're with.
