Solutiondiscovered,
You sound frustrated, and I'll wager a lot of folks here share your frustration.
Many of the answerers have hit it right on the head. Emotion is a big factor blocking logical thinking. Fear is a really big one because many people find the idea of changing their views or opinions threatening. Some just because change is scary (and those folks usually aren't aware they're afraid) some because they're comfortable with their current worldview and don't want to change.
Other blocks include:
Booze
Ignorance
Laziness
Arrogance
Insecurity
Inattentiveness (they don't pay enough attention to hear the argument... goes back to laziness, I suppose)
And let's face it, some people are just... Jerks.

You partly answered your question. It's ignorance partly due to a decline in the Public School System, But that's not a national issue. I learned that's it's regional.East Coast schools emphasize education more. I would say all of the original 13 colonies embrace their rich history through education, that develops educated or thinking people that will hopefully manifest into a network of teachers. "Each one teach one". As a High School drop-out with an above average IQ raised in Connecticut but has traveled immensely, I see it starts in the schools. Smart kids grow up into smart parents, conversely, ignorant ones will do the same in reverse. I once met a woman in her late 30's , early 40's that didn't want her 9 year old to eat at McDonald's because she didn't want her to eat 100% pure beef. When asked why, she replied "I don't want her to be eating a cow's eyes, ears, and what not" She thought they must have put a whole cow in a grinder to produce beef. And this is the parent the child would go to for help with homework or life. It's a cycle that's getting worse. To help with your frustration sometime, being intelligent, you must understand everyone doesn't have the same knowledge. And when you can, teach or inform, don't scorn or get upset

As with many other places, you see more of the obnoxiously opinionated and vocal people on here. So don't worry too much about the human condition...
General ignorance is a big problem with what you mentioned. People mouth off without really knowing all the arguments and facts. The other problem is that there's a lot of discussions here about religion, homosexuality, racism, and other things that are contentious subjects with many people. Religion is going to be a big one, since religious beliefs, as a whole, have no basis in reality and logic.

People are the way they are for a reason.
If we grow up under the influence of a dominating personality, we may have our free will overpowered and find that we have never been given permission to have a logical opinion about anything.
People are normally the product of other peoples power struggles.
A logical/lateral thinking person has many people to thank for the influence they played in facilitating the way they think

Too many distractions from the balance of emotion-intellect-volition and all three are needed in an ebb and flow. My theory is that Plato distorted what Socrates actually spoke just a tiny bit and then Aristotle really screwed it up - he hated women and said slavery was fine in some situations. Mothers hurry first word learning. So generation after generation is more comfortable in confusion and lethargy. Argument and debate are far too popular, even though they are stimulating temporarily...overrated they are. People like the noise and flash of violence and war to wake them up.

I'm very often just like you.
But let's think about this here.
Does everyone have time to sit and THINK?
There are too many people just trying to scrape by.
Or they are focusing on what's important, and they really ARE using their grey matter, just not on the things YOU think they should know.
We have religions, and leaders, and scientists, and the whole lot, just so that we don't have to painstakingly agonize over every decision in our lives.
To vaccinate or not?
Ask the doctor! Etc.
Now, if we all had our own thoughts about everything, there wouldn't be anyone to run the companies that take your money for internet service.
There wouldn't be any delivery people for those who LIKE their mail and hand-held newspapers.
There would BE anything, b/c we'd all be THINKING about everything!

Logic, the science of reasoning, is often blocked by a person's emotions, or various things that influence emotions.
Such things can be the media, family, religion, etc.
In other words, people are too distracted to think anymore.
They rely on others to do it for them.
It's mind control, really.
No one bothers to think for themselves anymore.
They think what they're told to think.

Upbringing is a major part of what block people from using logic. It is definitely something that is a part of parental training.

Tell me about it!
Emotion is a big block to using logic. Unfortunately humans are emotional creatures.

Tradition, prejudice, cultural norms, ignorance, lack of understanding, and intolerance can all lead to being illogical. Additionally, mental or cognitive limitations can contribute also.
