i just did one of these last night on my laptop. nothing really needs to be backed up because all of the system files and your documents and everything will stay intact as long as you dont restore to before the program was installed. the system restore is reversable so if it doesnt fix your problem you can undo the restore

It depends on what you intend to do. The System restore feature only restores system files. If you are doing a system RECOVERY (by re-formatting the hard drive), you have to be a little more "careful". When I reformat my hard-drive (every 3 months), I wipe the whole thing. I have a second hard-drive that I keep music, photos, other personal stuff on, that I leave alone. So, basically, if you reformat the thing, don't just re-install all the same program again, otherwise, why bother? If you do not have a second hard drive to save personal stuff to, then back SAFE stuff up (stuff that you know it's origin), and wipe the rest.
