My family may need to move to Seattle some time in the future. I was interested in Lakewood but I do not know much about that town. So I have a few questions to ask.

Is Lakewood very isolated or are you near major towns?
How are the schools there?
Is it a pretty safe neighborhood?

I live in Tacoma and have lived in Lakewood. I would not recommend either to be save or suitable to raise a family in. All of the cities run together up here, it is weird you cross the street and your are in Tacoma, so no it is not isolated. It is very unsafe, when I lived in Lakewood I would here gunshots all the time, lots of drugs and overall crime. I would recommend Bellevue, it is closer to Seattle and alot safer. A little more expensive but well worth it. Lacey is also not bad, by Olympia. As for the schools I do not like Clover Park school district which is Lakewood, Tacoma School District is better but still not the best! If you are set on moving to the Lakewood/Tacoma area, move to North Tacoma, it is a little safer there and very pretty! Feel free to email me if you want to chat more about the area, I could go on forever! Good luck in your move!

Lakewood is near Tacoma, and has grown as urban sprawl has taken over. You will not be isolated, you will be right next to McChord AFB and Ft. Lewis. Traffic in this area, especially along I-5, can be horrible (Friday nights being the worst).

Lakewood is a lower to middle class area. There are pockets of heavy crime and other pockets of very nice expensive houses. It really depends on where you are. In the last few years the gang problem in Tacoma has moved to Lakewood due to Tacoma's police force cracking down on crime and the fact that Lakewood wasn't a city, therefore, did not have it's own police force. If you are set on moving to Lakewood you really need to look at the neigborhood you're planning on as some are better than others.

Due to Lakewood being a military town, there are lots of students that are transferring in and out of the schools. I don't know how good the schools are currently.

Bridgeport Way turns into South Tacoma Way and has lots of car dealerships and strip bars along it. Whenever you have a military base you have car dealerships, strip clubs and tatoo parlors. It's part of military life.

We lived there about 20 years ago and now live in Olympia which we like a lot more. Lakewood has lots of hardworking military families but lots of transitions in the schools because of that. Some area have very high crime rates. It is not isolated, it is next to Tacoma, where I would never choose to live because of crime.

Hope that helps.

i think the best way to explain lakewood is to point out that it is one of the few towns in washington were "Cops" is filmed.
Tacoma has the highest crime rate in washington, Lakewood is a suburb of Tacoma.
