I bought a 10 gal. tank with 2 goldfish. It has the filter that hangs off the side. do I also have to have an airpump for oxygen or is the filter sufficient?

Well, you don't need an air pump, no. The filter will provide enough water agitation and oxygenations. Air pumps are, for the most part, ornamental. If you like how the air bubbles look then there's no reason you can't have one, but it won't be particular beneficial.

Your main problem will be that your two goldfish will outgrow a 10 gallon tank. Fancy goldfish need 15 gallons each, and other types like commons, comets and koi need to live in ponds because they can be longer 12".

Well I'm sure some people will tell you they do, some you don't. The fact is the hanging filter aerates the water and almost always does the job. As your goldfish begin to outgrow the tank you may find an an airpump will help, or a larger tank, but for now I'd say you should be OK.

The fish will be the real answer to your question. They will quickly let you know if they don't have enough oxygen by gasping at the surface.

No, i'm sorry. No fish can proceed to exist in bowls. Bowls do no longer enable ideal air bypass the two. cleansing the bowl as quickly as each week isn't something. a ideal aquarium might desire a water substitute as quickly as each week. A Bowl might desire 2 water differences an afternoon to maintain your Goldfish secure from ammonia stages yet then it might die from rigidity. Goldfish bypass quite some waste. greater suitable than different fish. that's certainly stated to double your filtration device. in case you have a Goldfish in a 20 gallon, you will possibly desire a 30-40 gallon filter out. Goldfish require a filter out and bubble stone/air source. What you're describing is a fancy Goldfish. It desires a 20-30 gallon in basic terms for it on my own. If in a bowl it wont stay long in any respect. If the ammonia stages are not getting it, loss of oxygen will.

The filter might provide enough surface agitation to mix enough oxygen into the water. But since they are goldfish and that tank is way way too small for them...you are going to need an air stone and a filter if you want them to live at least a month. Sorry, but goldfish get BIG, and need BIG tanks. If you cannot get a bigger tank but still want to get into fish keeping, i would suggest getting a heater and picking up some guppies or other small tropical fish, they will be fine in a 10 gallon tank and are very easy to care for. Goldfish simply won't survive in that tank, they need at least 20 gallons a piece to be healthy.

i found its better to do regular gravel vacuums and water changes than bother with an airpump. if you change about 1/3 of your water once a week it should give them enough new water full of oxygen you don't need the airpump. just watch them and if they spend a lot of time breating at the top change about 1/3 of the water and see how long they can go without going to the top for air.

Your filter may provide enough oxygen to the water, but the goldfish like to play in the bubbles. I have a large bubble bar in my 20 gallon goldfish tank, they really seem to like it.

No you do not need an air pump. They do nothing to add dissolved oxygen to the water. They are decoration only. Dissolved Oxygen (what fish breath from the water) can only enter your tank by water movement. Ie your filter water flowing into your tank.

Also, remember gold fish are pond fish and require 1 sq foot of surface water per inch of fish. Your gold fish more than likely will live a happy life in their aquarium. You will need to keep an eye on the quality to ensure the nitrates and ammonia do not spike on you.

Good luck and enjoy your fish.

IT's not neccesary, but it won't hurt. It's good to have more aeration. YOU CAN ALSO ATTACH ANOTHER FILTER TO THAT AIR PUMP,HELPING TO REDUCE THE MESS GOLDFISH MAKE AND CAUSING LESS STRESS FOR THEM.

an air pump is beneficial in breaking surface tension which helps in the process of breaking down of nitrates and ammonia

so yes it actually does help

so long as you clean the tank and do regualr water changes you dont need either. i had my good fish, won him free at a fair, for over 2 years. only died cause he jumped out of the bowl and my dog got him before i did.
