When the road conditions are slightly bad, such as even a little ice, snow, or even on gravel, the traction control light comes on, and the brake pedal refuses to despress. It is not like anti-lock brakes (the brakes aren't pumping like they should with the ABS) Though my bf says that he's not sure that we have ABS, though I'm pretty sure our manual says that we do (and its icy enough outside neither one of us wants to go get it right now).

But the basic issue is that the traction control (we think) is causing us to actually lose control, and causing our brakes to not work when we need them, and thus we are spinning out of control alot (thankfully, because God seems to really love us, we haven't had any actual accidents because of it).

So question #1 is-- What do you think is causing this
Question #2 is -- What can we do about it
Question #3 is -- Is there a way to turn off traction control, would it be safe to do so, or is it actually a problem with the brakes?

First and foremost here, stop driving the car. It sounds like you are having a serious problem with the car which makes it unsafe to drive. Anit-lock brakes and traction control are both part of the same system as they both use the brakes to control different applications. The ABS pulses the brakes to prevent the wheel from locking up when braking and the TCS pulses the brakes to prevent the wheels from spinning when accelerating. The first thing to do is get the ABS/TCS control module scanned for any codes stored, which there should be based upon what you are experiencing. The warning light on the dash either means the module has detected a problem or it comes on when the car is sensed to have a wheel spinning faster than the others. This is normally a simple wiring problem at one of the wheel speed sensors and it usually turns up to be a broken wire at one of the front wheels. The water and crap make the internal circuit worse so the light will come on and the system acts up. There also could be a problem with a wheel speed sensor. These are the most common problems. I am not saying for sure that this is the case, but it will give you an idea of what you are looking at. I would not bother to take it anywhere but a dealership or someone that has the capability to diagnose electronic/electrical intermittents. As I stated, do not drive this car anymore until it is repaired!! Good luck.

Best advice,

Read your manual about Traction Control.
If that light comes on take it to the dealer and tell them about the ABS also.

This sounds like a serious issue and The Dealer can make the car do wrong things to roubleshoot this problem's.

Take the car in to a Chevy dealer tell the consaultent what the car is dong befor you have a serious accident. If this problem acts up or reoccurs under relpaced parts 1yr/12,000 miles or if any have a lifetime warrenty the dealer will replace it if need to and no charge for the part or labor for parts under warrenty.

More than likely this is a problem with anti-lock brakes. If it sets a code{anti-lock light comes on}the traction control will not work.Take this to a good GM mechanic.
