Science fair means you should probably do some research from more trusted sources. But to start you off I will tell you that your sense of smell is caused by the nerves recognizing the oscillations of the molecules not size or shape. The encoding of the taste and smell is very similar since they stem from the same sense in our evolution but now they behave slightly different as they are maximized for different media.

See this is how it works....your brain really does not know whats going on, it can't see, smell, feel or anything else without the nerves for sensations of any kind (eyes, nose, ears, etc). So when you smell something, even if you see something else, your brain to a certain degree thinks the "smell" is more prominent thus making you expect to taste that particular associated flavor.

well, with me, it really doe not effect my taste because I really don't have a sense of smell. The few things I can smell don't smell right as I can remember what everything used to smell like.

If I am eating something and smell something else, my mind still expects the thing I am smelling though, so it is mainly a mind conscious deduction on how the brain works smell and taste.

Basically it is an "expected" flavor associated with a smell.

Just remember your brain is nothing more than a processor. It really does not know anything without the input of the senses you have. even though you see it, if you don't smell it, that part of your brain does not know it is there. When you smell something, that is often more memorable than any other sense, so smalling is the more dominant sense, thus making you EXPECT something to taste like the smell. So, if you see pizza, but smell an orange, your brain thinks you are eating an orange that looks like a pizza!

a good science project for this is an apple, an onion, and a potato.... They all actually taste the same, but when you smell them your taste buds react to the different foods.... try it. Close your noe and take a bite of each (raw) and they all taste sweet....do a little research on some technical stuff and you got yourself a very good and interesting science project.

Different smells activate your spit glands, which wake up your taste buds. If it is a bad smell, then sometimes your mouth may become dry.

Lon Bon-
Smell actually does not affect your taste at all. lol Truthfully, smell and taste are interlinked together, that is why when you pinch your nose and then eat something, you don't taste it very well.
