A movie that isn't a incredible, totally engrossing epic, but isn't a direct-to-cable disaster either...in other words, a pleasant distraction, a good waste of time or excuse to sit down with some friends and a bowl of popcorn for an evening.
Now, everyone's tastes in movies is subjective, but I would suggest The Lord of the Rings trilogy is too heavy to be considered a popcorn movie, and Rocky V is too much a piece of trash to be considered a popcorn movie. So there you have two ends of the spectrum.
For my money, some movies that fall into this category might be, in no particular order:
School of Rock
Notting Hill
The Italian Job
Casino Royale (the new one)

A Popcorn movie is a movie Who is for fun, it's generally not a drama like Mystic River, but more like "The Rundown", a movie with Action Suspense to see with friends to have a good time but not thinking about what's the moral or "Who kill Who?"

Popcorn movies are those best watched in a theatre. They usually aren't very memoriable or good but they are ok to kill a few hours. Not bad but not particularlly good either.
Just something you can sitdown, eat some popcorn and go on with your life.

The only thing that's gud about the movie was eating the popcorn itself.

I think it's sort of the "no-brainer" type of movie. Something you just watch to relax. It doesn't make you think, etc.

It's something that is like fluffy kinda doesn't take itself seriously and isn' really that deep!
