We are considering buying a bearded dragon as a pet, and we have done a bit of research on them, and I feel we are fully capable of taking care of such an animal for the most part. But, we tend to go away on long weekend trips a few times a year, or on vacation once or twice a year. We really do not know anyone that would be able to care for the pet when we are gone either. Is this a pet that can survive a few days alone with extra food and water? Or is this not the pet to have if we can't be home 365 days a year?

Technically they can survive a couple of days without, but we just take ours with us. He rides on the dashboard of the car. It took a couple of times for him to get used to it and not get to that point where he wouldn't eat for a while after the ride, but now he's fine. We just bought a small dog carrier and put a towel in the bottom. We take his lights and anything he will need. We just don't always buy crickets on those weekends. He may eat only vegetables. When he was smaller, we carried him in a big plastic tub that we put some of his sand in. Then we just attached his light to the side and brought something for him to get on for sunbathing. It all worked out for us, and we travel ALOT since we are in college.

WOw Thats alot of questions I will try my best. 1. when i got mine no i had to buy everything seperate 2 they are desert animals so you need Calisum sand, a heat lamp possible a undertake heater somewhere for it to hind, somewhere for it to climb. 3. I wouldnty recommend I moved and mine didnt do so good with the move even know she still had her home as it was in the old house 4. ALot. you can get the Dragon for about 90.00 but all the set up is coslty. I had a 100 gallon Terraium and the light the under and any thing eles i proably dropped about about 600.00 5. Just keep things clean and give the dragon a bath about once a week. I never put more than a small bowl of drinking water in the cage. 6. at least once a week 7. no and no if it does get sick you will have to take it in to the vet tho 8. not to sure mine was 9 and my friends was 22 so i am not sure 9. I use to let mine out and hold and even take it for rides to the pet store or out side on a lease. Do not have dogs around they will try and kill it. I hope this helped. 1 thing that you must take in mind is that if you get a baby which is about 4 inches long you will need a smaller tank to start with so it gets the proper heat it needs. also the 1st year of its life you must be fragile there bones break easy. anything do not feed them crickets you catch outside get them from a pet store the ones out side could have cemicals on them from your lawn. Mine got parsite and i have to take it to the vet becasue of that. Good Luck

First of all, set your heat lamp on a timer... then the heating portion of caring for him is taken care of...
Mine has gone a day or two w/o food... he doesn't really drink water, we have this rock thing that holds water to give his tank the humidity that it needs... they really only need to be sprayed like once or twice a week...
Food is going to be your biggest issue... If you give him some crickets right before you leave...maybe someone can come in and feed him some greens while you are gone?? Mine prefered super worms and crickets when he was younger, now enjoys peas, bananas, and collard greens over the live food...
so depending on how old he will be... (my son's is a year and a half...)
You can buy food already in a container, which might make it easier for a friend to feed him...

Plan on getting timers so the lights can go on and off in 12 hour intervals and feed (crickets and veggies/greens) before you leave. Be sure to keep Bearded Dragon pellets in a bowl as well.

Bearded dragons are probably not the type of pet you should get if you won't be able to feed them every day. They need fresh veggies every day along with their crickets, and I don't think it would be a good idea for them to go for more than a day without them.

They do make wonderful pets, though (I have two), if you happen find someone who would be willing to feed them when you're gone.

If you don't know any responsible trustworthy people then owning a bearded dragon is the least of your problems. My aunt took care of four lizards and over 30 fish with no problem.

Depending on how long your gone, if you leave exrta crickets in there and put a timer on his light you should be good for a few days as long as your not gone a week.

NO heat rock!

As long as they have a heat rock, plenty of food, and drinking water. buy a drip bottle such as used by hamsters that will insure that they have fresh water. i have two bearded dragons. they should be good for about 3-4days. just make sure you give them plenty of attention when you get back. they are very social animals, so getting two is better than one.
