GMT means Greenwich Mean Time. Simply put, it's the time of day in which you had to eat a bad tempered spinach sandwich. LOL.
Actually the real meaning is a little more complicated. Basically it refers to mean solar time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich England.That is the time at which the sun is at it's highest point, or noon, over Greenwich. (Pronounced "gren-ich") Basically when the sun crosses the Greenwich meridian. An imaginary line that if drawn on a globe from the North pole to the South pole would cross over the top of Greenwich England.
Way back when, they used that time to set the clocks by. Now days they use the atomic clock which is a lot more reliable and, needless to say, accurate. GMT, because of the tilt of the planet and our elliptical path around the sun, could be off by up to 20 minutes. Not what you might call very reliable if you had a date.
GMT timezone refers to what time it is or would be in Greenwich England.
The "Mean" in GMT simply refers to the fact that they knew this system wasn't very accurate so some calculations had to be made to adjust for the tilt and orbit depending on the time of year. I think it actually means that the guy who had to do the calculations got really mad about it so he was always mean to everybody. But what do I know.

As stated several times before GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time which in the time in Greenwich, England at the prime meridian (0 degrees longitude).
The statement that all times zones are based off of GMT is true, but then again it's false. The international standard for time is UTC (Universal time coordinate A.K.A CUT coordinated universal time) which is the same time zone as GMT, okay it a nomenclature thing but it's important.
And the international date line is in the middle of the pacific ocean at roughly 180 degrees longitude it represents the boundary between GMT+12 and GMT-12

you're not any further in a GMT time zone. it is Greenwich advise Time (The Greenwich Observatory is in a London suburb. we are Zone -6, which means we are six hours west. it is frequently suggested as imperative Time.
