Need to build a raft for the raft race.
Have no materials and no experience of building a raft.

What are some good things to use? That are CHEAP/FREE and easy to get. I have 3-4 months.

Empty plastic bottles sealed tight hold air and float. Lash together soda bottles, milk bottles and such with lightweight nylon rope sold at everything is a dollar stores. The rope unravels and you can use the thinner lighter twine to lash all the bottles together. If you are using milk jugs, use half gallon ones one the interior and surround them with gallon jugs.
You can glue the lids on and tie them as you collect them.
You can use a tarp also available at dollar store to create the deck. a rudder can be a broom stick with a ping pong paddle duct taped to it.
This rig will get you afloat but will not survive rapids. A long pole will propel you or you will need oars. Rafts have been known to have sails, but that is up to you.
I saw on Ripley's beleive it or not, a guy did this, with several layers of tarp and filled the deck with dirt and plants, creating a moving island, not fast but fantastic to see.

Wood floats, a bed is made of wood, but you need to water seal it so it doesn't become waterlogged and sink, paint it.

Get out of your place and go looking in dumpsters and alleys for material. People in this country throw away enough stuff to build a house, sinks, tubs, furniture, wood, building supplies. Go get some.
