Fundamentalist Christians would have you believe God made it in seven days. Now that we live in an age where people don't need to be fobbed off by fairy stories, we can deduce that it probably started when the universe expanded into its space and over millions of years enough residual dust particles gathered to form planets. Read Bill Bryson's A Brief History of Nearly Everything.

Basically the Earth was formed from one of the trailing parts of a swirling cloud of super hot gas (given out as a result of the 'Big Bang' ) which condensed to a liquid and then formed a crust over the liquid (molten) interior. The original atmosphere was a reducing one as oposed to the oxidising one we are used to. A reducing atmosphere enabled the formation of more and more complex molecules.

Buy the book "A short history of nearly everything" by Bill Bryson. It is all explained in there and is far too complicated to explain here (and I've forgotten!!).
