some good advice there but after checking for the adware/spyware/virus's....if you find nothing then a good old format is usually the ideal step.
every time you install a prog, it adds to the registry and deleting the prog rarely removes every file associated with the prog, leaving a very fat registry full of unwanted rubbish, add to this the files that everyone should clean out regular, temp internet, history, cookies etc it is no wonder pc's slow down.
if you are after making the pc faster as newer games are running slow then an upgrade is your best option there.

One of the biggest things slowing down PCs today are viruses, adware, spyware, and the like.
I would advise you download these Free virus/adware scanners:
Spybot S&D: http://www.spybot.info/
This is a very good scanner and it is Free
Also Ad-Aware SE Personal: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
It is also Free and a good scanner
I hope this helps,

As you don't state your O S or hardware components,I assume you are running XP
Of course there is no substitute for manual tweaking, Registry hacks and overclocking, but this isn't for everyone. If you would like a utility to do this for you;Have you tried XP Smoker;
Not exactly free, except for the trial version.

First, scan your computer for viruses or spyware, as these can slow down your computer. I recommend:
AVG Free (Antivirus)
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5
Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition (Antispyware)
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html
You could also scan your computer's running processes as too many will slow down the PC. Download a process scanner from

If your computer is running slow, the solution is to remove unneeded programs, not download and install more. Uninstall unwanted programs, defrag hard drive, and add more RAM if you're only at 512MB or less. Also, stop downloading porn.
