The mongols were feared because they were at the time almost unbeatable. Their tactics, and discipline were very advanced for the time. The war machine built by Genghis Khan was amazing and they were not defeated. They left Europe because of the death of Kublai Khan, they were not defeated.

They were feared because they were ruthless conquerors who were very efficient in overrunning pretty much any village they wanted. Genghis Khan is known as one of the greatest, most ruthless, and most feared leaders in history.

They were aggressive and warlike and their military technology was even more advanced than that of medieval Europe. Their archers and horsemen combined with their innovative military tactics made them superior to any army that then existed.
