The Objective for the Battle of the bulge was to split the western front and capture, ruin, and destroy the ports at Antwerp forcing the allies to extend their supply lines from other smaller ports farther away.
It was a dumb plan, it could not have stopped the war, or even dragged out the war, or change the war.
It did have an far greater negative effect upon the Germans than it did upon the allies for it expensed most of there fuel, ammunition, and troop reserves that the Germans had. Basically the Germans broke there own back trying this foolish plan. It was the last German offensive, last German action of the army command or above scale.

The goal of the Battle of the Bulge as planned by the Germans was to split the British and American Allied line in half, capturing Antwerp and then proceeding to encircle and destroy four Allied armies, forcing the Western Allies to negotiate a peace treaty in the Axis’s favor. It was an act of desperation by the Germans.

The answers given here so far are fairly good. But there could be another question: Why did the Germans concentrate the little offensive power they had left at that time on the western front instead of in the east, where the Soviet forces were close to the German capital? Probably Hitler thought, that Stalin was too tough to be impressed in any way, and in the vast regions of the east one could never have strategic success.

Split the British and American forces and capture the vital port of Antwerp. Hitler believed this would cause a split amongst the British and Americans and force a politcal settlement to the war.
