There were lots of types of siege engines. There were catapults, battering rams, siege towers, ladders, ballistas, trebuchets, and more.

In order to properly know which type you are referring to, we'd have to know what it did or what it looked like. However, Wikipedia has a good site with reference information and pictures on it.
