the intelligence was that german resistance was weakest at that location, and that the beachhead was shallow enough for the amphibious craft to land.

Intelligence was wrong on both counts.

First of all The beaches of Normandy were like the Pad de Calais within the range of Allied Fighters. Next the British learned from their first landing not to go at a port city. The Germans knew that a port would be needed for an invasion force to stay. Then the Allies used the
Pad de Calais as a deception to make the Germans move their troops their instead of the beaches of Normandy were we landed are troops at. The Deception was Called Operation Bodyguard. The lie was that the First United States Army Group or FUSAG will attack the Pad de Calais under the command of General Patton. The Germans though that he would lead the main invasion because he was the best offensive (Attacking) General in the European theater. This caused most of the Defense forces even most of the Panzer Reserves to sit at the Pad and watch for an invasion that never came across . Operation Overloard (The Invasion of Normandy) was saved from reinforcements coming in and pushing us back into the sea.

through spring of 1944, the destiny of the Axis as a rule, and Germany especially, grow to be highly a lot a done deal. in the East, the Russians had ultimately held and were commencing to push the German military again. The Allied forces had already taken North Africa, and were advancing up the Italian boot. Had Hitler (or the different severe-score Nazi) suspected that the landings were to be in Normandy, quite than swallowing the large disinformation scheme that pointed to Calais, I actually have no doubt that the landings would were postponed till such time as circumstances were actual. It grow to be contact and bypass because it grow to be, exceptionally on the Omaha sea coast-head. yet lose the conflict? unlikely. Germany now no longer had thre resources, including guy-potential, to desire for some thing except a negotiated peace.

The landing grounds were unsuitable for invasion craft. The German defenses were very strong as they expected Pas de Calais as the likeliest landing site because it was closer to England. Although Hitler and Rommel both thought Normandy was the likely landing zone allied deception efforts created enough doubt that large German forces and coastal defences were massed in the P.d. Calais.

Because the beaches were a better landing site for a large invasion force
It would have been impossible to capture a port in working order as the germans would demolish everything as soon as the in vasion started.
So the allies needed large sandy but firm beaches where they could land armor and artillery.
The problem of a lack of port facilities was solved by constructing floating docks in England and towing them to Normandy soon after D-Day. These were code named Mulberry A and Mulberry B
