i work with two computers - an old pc and a new mac. i have microsoft word on both. they are not networked together so i have to email files back and forth. somewhere in cyberspace, the barcode numbers within the word documents don't turn out correctly. all other formatting and fonts transfer perfectly, so why don't the barcodes look right? any ideas on how i can fix them?

You need the same barcode font installed on both machines. The font is not embedded in the Word document, you have to install it manually. Once the barcode font is installed on both machines the barcodes will appear as they should.
