"HOMOPHOBIC" is a very controversial term. The majority of psychologist believe homophobia comes from repressing ones own homosexual feelings, and the fear of being homosexual themselves.
In 1996, a study of 64 heterosexual men at the University of Georgia found that the allegedly "homophobic" men were considerably more likely to experience more erectile responses when exposed to homoerotic images than non-homophobic men.

why would a gay person HATE gays? If anyone is gay, it's the person that's always sticking up for them, fighting to get them special rights that no one else has. Why would you hate something you are?

Not necessarily. Hating gays is no indicator for sexual orientation.

Some men hate gays just on principles, some men hate gays because can't accept they are gays themselves, and (thankfully!) most men don't hate gays.

The converse is true: liking gays is no indicator for sexual orientation.
