That's bad...First off, did you just get your computer or has this just started? If you just got it, take it back! If you got it from a Wal-mart or someplace that has no support shame on you :-p
Anyways, it sounds like it could be a number of things: mostly software. If you have your Windows XP disc, you could try intalling a repair installation of Windows. This won't write over that data you have on your hard drive, rahter it will install Windows again in a new folder and use that copy to boot up. This should at least let you get on so that you can back up your data before something drastic happens...
If the problem continues, then it's a hardware issue...take it to a computer repair specialist; they can hook your hard drive into a system so that your data can be accessed (if you'e got a desktop, if it's a laptop then you're out of luck there) and let them try to diagnose what you need.
Good luck with your repairs!

Do you have a laptop or a desktop, sometimes laptops just get overheated and restart out of nowhere, I know it sucks, but that is the computers way of protecting it from dying completely, plus many programs gets saved under a cache, and laptops getting overheated is a normal problem that happens sometime. Or it may be something serious, it may be a virus that is releasing a time shut off.

The computer sounds like its set up on hibernation after so many mins of not being used. If that is the case right click on the desktop go to properties then to screen saver you will see power options at the bottom go there and go to hibernate and if the box is check uncheck it. The hibernate fixure also might be set up in your power schemes which you can turn off.
Hope this helps.

Go to Start>control panel>power options>then disable the hibernation. Also, you may choose to make your computer only shut down when you shut it down. While you are at the power option window, choose the 'never turn off' for all the various options, hard drives, monitor, et.

Sounds like the hybernation mode is being kicked in.. Even inadvertantly.. You'd have to disable it. It's in the desktop properties if I'm not mistaking.

Sounds like you've either got a virus, OS corruption, or hardware failure. Either that or you've installed a game that uses Starforce copy protection.
