a similar example is :- all Ferrari cars have a unique logo in which there is a horse. if u have a Cadillac then it has a logo which does not have a horse in it.so it can be clearly seen that you car isn't a Ferrari.

in your question a basic property of most metals(exception:mercury)is malleability.i.e. the property of metals to be beaten into thin sheets.when you hammer precious stones,they don't turn into thin sheets rather they break.so they can't be called metallic substances.
