I'd like to ask you opinion on this.

I applied for a job recently - it was an administrator's job on a salary of £16,000 pa + benefits, and a certain amount of home-based work. It appealed to me as I have a small baby at home who I'd like to stay home with as much as I can. I'm a graduate with loads of experience.

I got an interview which went very well, they were impressed with my CV and my personality and I felt pretty good about.

I didn't get the job in the end and I rang up (as I always do) to ask for feedback on my application and areas where I might need to improve or which may have let me down.

The lady I spoke to said that there was nothing wrong with my application at all - they were very impressed, but they had had 250 applicants for the job! And out of those only 230 hadn't even got an interview!!!!

How on earth does this sit with "full employment"?!?! 250 applicants and 230 don't even get to the interview stage?

I'm now looking for cleaning work.

Sorry - typo - I meant that 230 **hadn't** got an interview - they'd only interviewed 20 people.

Don't think you're alone here - that's the way of the world. The only thing I can say to you is keep trying. Don't go for cleaning work - just stick at it. It took me over a year to find a decent job after leaving uni.
I've no doubt that you were impressive at interview - it's just a case of there being someone there a tiny bit more impressive. That's how it goes.

It is more complicated than that. It seems that the job you are talking requires few skills and a relatively good wage (anyone can do it) hence the high number of applicants. It is all to do with demand and supply in the job market. There are few good jobs and many applicants for them. If the same job was advertised offering no 16,000 but, say, 14,000 I doubt there would have been 250 applicants. I think this job was particularly popular because it offered the chance to work from home which many people want.

Also some sectors of the economy experience skills shortages with not enough people to fill them.

Some people are disabled / between jobs, while others simply claim benefits and refuse to work. Basically, there is NEVER full employment in any capitalist economy for many reasons.

If you look the politicians actually talk about high employment the implication of 'full' employment is based on the 'theory' that 5% of the population is 'unemployable' for a wide variety of reasons, ranging from lack of skills, illness to skiving. So any area that reports a low applicant level or a low skill level of applicants for particular jobs gets marked as 'full' employment.
Why else did they allow 1,000,000 new people to seek work in this country in the last 3 years alone?

Sorry you didn`t get the job, interviewing large numbers, can be a difficult process! trying to sort out who should be short listed. You can be Proud that you achieved that list. Don`t give up trying and good luck for the future.

it would be nice to know prior to the interview what sort of personality they are looking for do you think it could be that you have a baby so could take time of when the baby is sick? it makes you think.

full employment means that there are so many more opportunities than in other countries..
If you fail with a company...there are still thousands other companies that you could try and eventually you WILL find employment..
You cannot expect to find a job at your first attempt...
In many countries you only get a few attempts...
Plus...even cleaning work is a form of employment...

I know!It's ridiculous!
These days the important thing is "who you know" and not "what you know and what kind of degree you have"
