I don't think there's any definitive proof of an affair but he certainly was smitten with her...as were several other men. I think she was a flirt and maybe a tease.

If you are writing an essay on this why not give reasons for the affair having happened and reasons opposed to the affair having happened. Assign a percentage to each reason. But ar the end of the essay the percentage for and against should end up 50/50.

Remember, George wasn't our George when the Fairfax affair happened. He would be another man among many to Sally.

The historical thought based upon letters/correspondence is he worshiped her from afar, or it was an unrequited love. the letters were written in the formal stilted style of the 18th century.
