Cure for cancer: No profit means no interest in it ?

A research scientest at the University of Alberta believes he will have problems with research money into a simple cancer treatment; because there is not profit in it, it is not a patenable drug.

January 16, 2007 - Edmonton - DCA is an odourless, colourless, inexpensive, relatively non-toxic, small molecule. And researchers at the University of Alberta believe it may soon be used as an effective treatment for many forms of cancer.

Dr. Evangelos Michelakis, professor U of A Department of Medicine, has shown that dichloroacetate (DCA) causes regression in several cancers, including lung, breast and brain tumors.

Do you think the fact that profits cannot be made in a cure, renders much of the research money into expensive pharamceutical drugs and treatments that are not the best ?

This is why we should try to eliminate the profit motive in disease treatment.

The healthier we are the more we can spend on GMC, Ford and Chrysler products.

Like I have said before, in Italy doctors receive a flat fee per patient per year, so they are motivated to keep you healthy and out of their offices.

Yes, that is sadly correct. The problem is when a cure or something that helps is not patentable most companies will not touch it, because anyone can make it and prices will become very low as competition grows. I am a consultant for alternative medicine in the US and although many of the products I love and have seen help people over come many health conditions including cancer, I can not openly claim I can help others with the same conditions for that very reason. The products can not be regulated by the FDA, because they are natural and therefore they can not make money off of them. It is a sad world when the treatments openly advertised for any condition cause more things to go wrong in the body, causing in most cases a need for another medication. Most everything is run buy the greed for money and our lives are being set aside and risked because of it. Hope everyone who reads this question and the answers really looks at what they put into their bodies.

I agree with you. Follow the money. With all the money they spend on cancer you would think they would come up with a cure by now, but no. There were cures for cancer back in the 1930's that were destroyed by the AMA. Why ruin a good thing? A group of healers completely eliminated cancer in a liver, for free. Would the American Cancer Society care? Hell no. I've seen people pray away cancer. This is the sacred cow of the pharmaceutical companies. Don't try to fix something that works.

The sad facts of this is that money rules. The Drug companies make billions per year on cancer treatments, a large percentage of their medicines cause the patient to die from complications, and not the cancer. Until the world demands change not much will happen. I am a cancer survivor of one of the deadliest forms of cancer which is called incurable. I did 5% regular MD medicine and 95% natural that is what saved my life. There is a place for the pharmacy medicines but they in turn will not recognize natural.
Hmmm I wonder what happend before big pharma was born. People used natural remedies.

AMA AND FDA--
The American Medical Association (AMA) and the pharmaceutical companies control medical law and the FDA in this country with heavy lobbying and a revolving door policy. WHY would they want to do this? It's about the money. In 2004, medicine (doctors, hospitals, researchers and pharmaceutical firms) received 1.1 TRILLION dollars--1/4th of the total earnings (GNP 4.4 trillion) in the U.S. This is astounding--MILLIONS of people worked the whole year just to pay the nation's medical expenses!! That's totally amazing, and just too big to care about individuals.
