Women in their 20s and 30s should have a clinical breast exam (CBE) as part of a regular exam by a health expert, preferably every 3 years. After age 40, women should have a CBE by a health expert every year. It might be a good idea to have the CBE shortly before the mammogram. You can use the exam to learn what your own breasts feel like.

Women who are 40+ are at the highest risk for breast cancer. That is why they are screened regluarly.

If you have the clincial breast exams performed by a health care professional, they will let you know if you need a mamaogram.

The reason for that is because women over 40 have a much higher chance of developing breast cancer. And because almost every insurance company does not cover preventive mammograms for women under 40 unless there is a strong family history of breast cancer. I'm sure they would perform one as requested if the patient would be willing to pay for it out of pocket.

Certain types of cancer do not appear until a certain age. Breast cancer, is something that affects older women mostly. Unless you have a lump, or something suspicious, why would your doctor want to waste the money??
