He has rarely spit up in the past and all of a sudden no matter what we feed him or how much we give him he continually spits up alot. We have tried to thicken up his formula and that doesnt work, we have tried giving him less formula and he just seems to get angry because he isnt full. When we give him cereal at night he seems to be content and no spitting up with the cereal it just seems that the formula he cant keep down, is there any reason that could be causing this, please help!!

You should speak with your pediatrician. They can go over all of the relevant questions.

But here are a few things to think about.
Does he spit up when you feed him less? If not then it may be a 'loose' flap on the stomach to the esophagus which is usually out grown (lived through active 2 spitters). It is unusual to show up now instead of from the beginning and should be discussed with his dr.

If he's been eating cereal for a while and the spitting just started he may be drinking much more than previously and now it's enough to 'trigger' the spitting. You could try cereal at breakfast and lunch (if he's not already getting it) and see if he drinks less and the spitting calms down.

Or if you recently started cereal, did the spitting up start within 3-5 days of starting the cereal? If so he may have a mild reaction to the cereal, but only the formula is coming up. You may want to stop the cereal for a few days and see if the spitting stops.

It would be SO nice if kids came with instruction manuals!

Good Luck!

Sometimes when adding solid foods and still using formula, baby gets gassy when drinking the formula. Try burping him several times during one bottle of formula. If you give him the chance to burp 3 or 4 times he may spit up less. You cannot quit formula all together until one year so if this doesn't work then you should talk to your doctor about this. My nephew spit up after each bottle as well once cereal and fruits and veggies were introduced and that was the advice the doctor gave my sister. Neither of my two kids had that issue so I don't know first hand what your going through but my sister said this worked for her. Good luck.

We had this problem as well about the time we started cereal. Turned out we were over feeding them. It takes their tummies time to expand so for a couple weeks I fed them in shorter intervals (~ ever 2.5 hours) 7 feedings total for the day and in bed by 9. Now by 7 months we are down to every 3.5 hours and 6 feedings.

Your baby is old enough to be started on solids. Try more cereal and mushy foods and less formula. If you think your baby isn't getting enough formula use it to make the cereal.

My little boy spit up the first 7 months of his life. I would ask your pediatrician if your little boy could be put on Zantac. It's a prescription just like the ones us adults can purchase over the counter, but it's a liquid that you just put in their bottle. I worked wonders with my little boy. Hope this helps!

Could be a bit of reflux...might be time to take him in to the Dr to get some ranitidine to keep the acid down. Keep him upright for about 1/2 an hour after.

Did you recently change your formula brand or change the type of water used to mix it? It could also be that the manufacterer changed their recipe just enough that he can no longer tolerate it.

Consider a brand of soy based or one that breaks the milk fats down more.

You should ask your GP for a referal to a Paediatrician.

Does he bring anything else up or just the milk?

It could be an intolerance to the milk.
