Film-making for Dummies is a great start. Watch a lot of movies. Not the way you are used to watching movies for entertainment but watch them like a filmmaker does. Look at different camera angles, different shots, and plot development. Probably the most important thing you can do is watch the bonus features of a DVD and listen how the movie was put together and how they brought the script to life because that might be you in the future. Film school will come later or not at all depending on you. There is some directors who never went to film school, maybe you can start off by being on the set of an independent film.

Become as involved in the film/media community as possible. Visit sites like creativecow.com and studentfilmmakers.com. Learn as much as you can about the technical details. Then once you have a good story, write it down, even if its not in a script form (I write in a story/script mixed format). Find people that are interested in the story (or in the worst case scenario, nag them to help instead of sitting at home with a script and nothing). Then direct your film. Don't be afraid of being wrong, and don't be afraid of listening to other people's suggestions. A good director cares about the quality of the film; a bad one (IMO) cares about his/her ego. Obviously, this doesn't even cover 0.0000000001% of filmmaking, but think of it as a spark to get the fire going. BTW, I'm very interested in filmmaking and directing as well, so feel free to contact me on my answers profile to talk about filmmaking. Hope this helps!

Finish High School and then head to a university. Do not attend Private non accredited colleges or universities. They steal your money and then leave you with no future. Buy yourself a video camera and start filming ideas and put them on youtube.

I think one of the first things you should do is actually make a few home videos with a camcorder. This can help determine, if that's really what you want to do.
Next, you should consider going to film school.

To be uncomplicated, its no longer that troublesome to change right into a director. grab a digicam, some actors and picture.strengthen you're a director. yet in all seriousness I fantastically propose going to movie college. some human beings propose no longer going exceptionally in case you basically pick to direct in spite of the undeniable fact that going there'll disclose you to different careers interior the marketplace besides as provide help to make a movie desirable. That being reported maximum human beings who pass into movie college pick to be wide-spread directors. about ninety% of my freshman production classification needed to direct and it is going to hardly take position for any of them. in case you pick to get into movie because you pick to be wide-spread or you imagine its glamorous, than, for my area, you're doing it for the incorrect causes. if you're doing it because you stay video clips and do not ideas operating 12+ hours an afternoon, on warm instruments, and being below pressure for lengthy sessions of time than by potential of all potential, pass to a 4 year college with a movie application and significant in movie production. do not get me incorrect, i like movie college and engaged on set can be a blast with a tremendous crew, yet its exertions. sturdy success!
