I have a hunch it's a claims adjuster of some sort, but why does he need to travel so much? Is he a corporate claims adjuster? I remember him explaining it on a plane to a fellow passenger, but I can't remember exactly.

He works for a car manufacturer. When there are "accidents" that appear to be because of a defect OR which are worse due to a defect (e.g., the car catching on fire and burning the family), he determines if it's cheaper to recall, settle, or ignore.

Sometimes, it's cheaper to just let people die and pay off the claims or settle out of court.

He travels because he has to go to the scene of the problem to "investigate."

nicely he hasn't incredibly have been given a attractiveness, in the script and the interest he's talked approximately as "Jack" "i'm Jack's broken heart", in the e book he reads the fast-thoughts as joe as apposed to jack yet tells Marla his actual call (which we don't see). in the credit Edward Norton is talked approximately as "The Narrator". yet as all of us know he incredibly is *SPOILER* Tyler Durden

He's a recall coordinator. He determines if the cost of the recall is worth it. In otherwords, if the cost of the recall is less then it would cost to just pay off the families invovled...they don't do one.

He obviously does not work for the insurance industry, he seems to be a business risk analyst for an automotive manufacturer.
