Although the friar and the nurse were contributing factors to the deaths of the two lovers, I do not believe it would be fair to say that they were responsible for their untimely demises. They did, though, make some mistakes during the course of the play.

The nurse was essentially Juliet's guardian. She alone in the house of the Capulet's knew of Romeo and Juliet's marriage. Instead of discouraging their actions, she promoted their behavior and helped them achieve such things behind the back of her parents, which was irresponsible of her.

Friar Laurence, like the nurse, encouraged Romeo and Juliet, making them husband and wife. Although he had positive intentions, his motive was not able to follow through. When the friar gave Juliet the concoction, making her appear lifeless, he sent a letter to the banished Romeo to inform him that Juliet was, in actuality, alive. The letter (due to the inability of another friar to deliver because of a quarantine) failed to reach Romeo like he intended. This resulted in Romeo committing suicide over the death of his young bride.

You must remember, though, that these were only contributing factors. Romeo and Juliet were exercising their free agency and made the decisions they did by themselves. so in reality, no one is responsible for their deaths but themselves.

They werent directly responsible- however looking at the friar...he knew that the two famillies were opposing however he still tried to bring Romeo and Juliet together...by giving Juliet a potion he made her seem to be dead and Romeo also recognised her as being dead....therefore killing himself. He was responsible for Romeos death...and therefore when Juliet woke up to see Romeo dead...due to him killing himself from the preconception that Juliet was dead.....the friar was therefore also responsible for Juliets death because she killed herself because romeo was dead....therefore both deaths were caused by the friar giving juliet the potion.

The nurse isnt so much responsible..in my opinion...

They both made several mistakes.

#1 - They were adults supposedly watching out for the well-bring of these children. Instead of encouraging their behavior, they should have convinced the young lovers to go to their parents together and plead for peace for their sakes.

#2 - The friar never should have married them w/out their parents permission.

#3 - The nurse encouraged the illicit romance by carrying messages back and forth between them.

#4 - When the friar should have stayed with Juliet in the tomb to make sure all was well when she awoke. Then he would have been able to explain the situation to Romeo when he arrived.

IMHO

They were only indirectly responsible. They couldn't reach Romeo fast enough with news of their plan, and as a result, he killed himself, just as Juliet awoke, and in her grief she killed herself. So if the friar had been faster or coordinated his plans better, then Romeo and Juliet might have lived happy ever after.

the nurse told juliet that romeo wasn't good enough for her AFTER she'd married him...juliet felt betrayed etc....
the friar wasnt really responsible, only in that he should have told romeo's servant (balthasar or something) that juliet wasnt dead. it wasnt his fault that romeo died, but it was his fault that juliet died because he ran away when he heard guards approaching the vault where romeo was mourning the sleeping juliet.
