Maybe we are the manifestation of the universe's attempt to sense itself.

The early Greek Philosophers tried to prove our existence by these two universals: mind and matter. Plato, Aristotle, Heraclitus, Democritus et al were among them.
Logically speaking, we should, no doubt about it, be able to tell of our existence by the faculty called mind. Ideas emerge from the mind. Telling that we exist, the mind will bring forth this form/idea.It can formulate the ideas that we do hear, touch, see, feel, and taste but without the experience.
Ideas are only impressed upon senses to bring forth sensation experience: the length, color, depth, width etc, called 'extensions'..

Take away the sense of smell and you would have no reason to bring up the memories that smell evokes. Take away taste and food would be meaningless. Take away sight and darkness would prevail. Take away touch and isolation from the world would be the norm. Take away hearing and without sight or any of the other senses and there would only be self. No objective world would exist.

If we had none of our five senses, I assume that we would not be able to respond to outside stimulus--i.e., the universe in its entirety--and therefore would not know it existed, BUT we may have an instinctive thought process still continuing.

I dont think we would know a whole lot because we would be going through this earth without being able to see, hear, touch, or smell. But we would still be able to feel with our hearts. But if no one can talk, what's the use of hearing.

I don't think you need any sense to feel your existence, especially if we only talk about those 5 senses. ;)
