I choose "Der Untergang" (also known as "The Downfall"), hands down.

Have none of you americans seen World War 2 movies made by Germans? Those are the best, really, all these american movies are just fake. I can't believe no one has chosen Der Untergang. Movies about Germans made by Germans are way more realistic than those american movies about american soldiers.

"Saving Private Ryan," hands down. A close second would be "Das Boot," in the original uncut director's version (which means subtitles and not being dubbed).
And the last time I looked, German-made movies weren't getting a lot of screen time here in the US. I would imagine to see one of those, you'd have to go somewhere that they're being played...like, maybe, Germany? ("Das Boot" played in the US because it was distributed here.)

Saving Private Ryan. I Know that the story is to save Ryan, but the context is The Second WW. A Unique Master piece, The directing is amazing (Best Director 99 : Spielberg), You seen these shots?!! The acting is perfect, Tom Hanks and Sizemore particullary. And the Screenplay one of the greatest.

Perhaps the original Manchurian Candidate (though that's more Cold War that WW2). Private Ryan is pretty good too. Catch-22 shows the sheer stupidity of war (though the book is infinitely better), and the German TV Series 'Das Boot'.
Hope that helps.

That movie is good!
For holocaust, watch The Gray Zone
For action, even though it's not a movie, watch Band of Brothers
To simply soak it in, try The Thin Red Line
I hear this currently playing French movie Days of Glory is really good but I haven't seen it yet.

DOWNFALL is great, but you really have to know the details of history to follow who all the characters are.
2 great "allegory" films about WW2 are:
LIFEBOAT by Alfred Hitchcock
SCHINDLER'S LIST by Steven Speilberg
2 superb low-tech British WW2 films are:
WENT THE DAY WELL?
ONE OF OUR AIRCRAFT IS MISSING
