My vote goes for Bon Jovi, but then again, I'm biased; I love 'em.
Why- who do YOU think is the greatest band ever?

Obviously Metallica. They've been through it all. (having their original bassist die in a bus crash, and their first lead guitarist go out on his own (Megadeth))Not because the radio stations overplayed their songs, but because they came out as a hardcore thrashmetal band and (no not sold out as they were pretty rich after their Puppets album) transcended the genre, and became popular among mainstream music fans, not to mention being the first band to somehow blend heavymetal/hard rock with Classical music as they did with their concerts/albums with the SF philharmonic. Metallica has had Techno remixes of their songs done and a group of 4 cellists name their group after them. Nobody has even come close to being as diverse or original as them. Their music speaks for itself.

The greatest band ever is "Murder By Death". The second album "Who will survive and what will become of them" is awsome. Its a concept album that every song tells a part of the story. Its about the devil coming up in a small mexican town and how the town fight back. Give it a listen.

For today (it changes like jackets for me) I would say Tool. THeir only flaw is that their earlier work was so much more groundbreaking than their "reflectionistic" other-worldly music today.
