on stage, the sm58 is the easy and safe way to go. its reliable. it sounds good. you can beat it up. the beta 58 is a step up, but i rarely notice the difference. i rock the sennheiser e835 and love it. if you wanted to add some class and style, go with the shure 55sh.
in the studio, keep as many mics as possible on hand. i keep three sm57s, two condensers (a rode nt2 and a akg perception 200), a nady rsm2, and a bunch of wierd old mics. i usually record into the ribbon (rsm2) with an sm57 a few feet back from it. use a condenser and stand closer to the mic if your style is more aggressive (punk, hardcore, or hip hop). its always a good idea to use multiple mics while recording.
