Do you mean the number of species, or the number of individual animals?

There are about 50 species of tortoise in the world, depending on how you count a species, ranging from the giant Galpagos and Aldabara Island species to the small Spider tortoises of Africa.

Most species of tortoise are at least threatened in the wild, between the pet trade, habitat loss, or loss of eggs and babies to feral dogs, cats, rats, pigs, and goats.

One sub-species of Galapagos tortoise is represented by a single older male. When Lonesome George dies, his entire sub-species will be gone.

I have never seen a guesstimate for the total number of tortoises in the wild in the world.
